Custom Paper Bag Guide 2026: Kraft, Handles, and Weight Rating
A paper bag is judged by whether it carries the load without shedding a handle. This 2026 guide compares kraft and coated stock, handle types and their ratings, reinforcement, print, and a clean order spec.

Kraft vs coated paper
Paper bags start as either natural kraft or coated white board. Kraft (usually 100-150 gsm) is unbleached, strong, and recyclable, with the rustic look shoppers associate with eco brands. Coated board (150-210 gsm) takes full-color print cleanly and looks premium but uses more fiber and often a polyethylene or clay coating that complicates recycling.
For 2026, many brands choose 120-150 gsm FSC kraft with a water-based coating instead of PE, keeping the bag curbside-recyclable while still printable. The trade-off is slightly lower rub resistance, solved with a matte aqueous coat.
From the factory floor
Kraft: 100-150 gsm, natural, recyclable.
Coated: 150-210 gsm, vivid print, heavier.
2026 pick: FSC kraft 120-150 gsm, aqueous coat.
Handle types and attachment
Handles decide both feel and weight capacity. Twisted paper handles are cheap and recyclable but hold less. Flat paper handles look cleaner and carry more. Rope (cotton or PP) handles feel premium and take the highest load but are not curbside-recyclable with the bag. Attachment is by knot, rivet, or reinforced patch; a patch doubles the pull strength at the stress point.
The failure point is almost always where the handle meets the bag. We reinforce with a 100 x 100 mm cardboard patch and a bar-tack or rivet rated to the bag's load. Skipping the patch to save a cent is the usual cause of a handle pulling out in a store.

warn
A thin bag with rope handles but no patch will shed the handle under 8 kg. Match the handle, the patch, and the paper weight to the actual load or returns follow.
Weight rating and reinforcement
A bag's rating comes from paper weight, gusset, and bottom construction. A 120 gsm kraft with a flat square bottom holds about 5 kg; 150 gsm with reinforced side seams reaches 8-10 kg; 210 gsm coated board with a cardboard base plate handles 12-15 kg for bottles or books. The bottom is usually a 'pinch' or 'square' fold; square bottoms stand and carry more.
For heavy items, add a base board (300 gsm greyboard) inside the bottom and use 12 mm wide seams with a second pass of adhesive. We test by loading 1.2x the rated weight and dropping from 0.5 m; bags that split are redesigned before the run.
Specification
5 kg: 120 gsm kraft, flat bottom.
10 kg: 150 gsm, reinforced seams.
15 kg: 210 gsm + base board.
Print methods and eco claims
Flexography is standard for kraft bags at 150-200 lpi; digital inkjet allows short runs and photo art but costs more per unit. For 2026, soy or water-based inks and FSC fiber are the claims buyers verify, so keep certificates on file. Aqueous rather than PE coating preserves recyclability; if a moisture barrier is needed, a thin PLA bio-coat is an option.
Color and registration
Print on kraft is darker than on white; light inks need a white underprint to pop. Registration tolerance is about +/-0.5 mm, fine for logos but worth tightening for legal text. We calibrate to G7 and target Delta-E below 3 against the approved proof.
tip
If your art is light-colored, ask for a white underprint on kraft; without it, pastels disappear into the brown fiber.
2026 order spec
A bag RFQ lists dimensions (W x D x H with gusset), paper weight, handle type, print, and quantity. Digital short runs start at 500 bags; flexo starts near 3,000. Lead is 10-15 days digital, 20-30 days flexo. Keep MOQ aligned to season to avoid dead stock.

How much weight can a paper bag hold?
5 kg at 120 gsm, up to 15 kg at 210 gsm with a base board and reinforced seams.
Which handle is strongest?
Rope handles with a reinforced patch carry 10-15 kg; twisted paper suits 3-5 kg.
Are kraft bags recyclable?
Uncoated or aqueous-coated FSC kraft is curbside-recyclable; PE-coated or rope-handled mixes are not.
